What is PROUT?
The Progressive Utilization Theory
PROUT is an acronym for the Progressive Utilization Theory. Conceptualized in 1959 by Indian Philosopher Shrii Prabhat Ranjan Sarkar, PROUT provides a comprehensive socio-economic and political framework for a new civilization based on the principles of maximum utilization and rational distribution of all resources — physical, mental, and spiritual.
Unlike capitalism, which concentrates wealth in the hands of the few, or Marxist communism, which subordinates individual liberty to the state, PROUT charts a third alternative: a decentralized economy with cooperatives at its heart, governed by cardinal human values.
PROUT Journal has been the flagship publication bringing these ideas to a global readership — featuring essays, interviews, analyses, and field reports from practitioners and thinkers around the world.
