Acoupled with capitalism held out hope for the erstwhile socialist republics. The intellectuals within the erstwhile Soviet Union became the new rulers of the disintegrated States. With the active assistance of US Government they started to lead and drive their nations towards the capitalistic economy. The US government gave conditional aid and insisted upon the formation of democratic form of government as is known and practised in Europe and the United States. The said republics having gone through a long period of dictatorial rule starting with Lenin and ending with Gorbachev fell an easy prey to the allurements in the hope of a free and unexploited society. They were unaware of the exploitations they will have to suffer under the capitalist system which could be even more severe than that which they had already undergone. ![]() The vagaries of capitalism are now apparent from the meltdown of the economic system in the United States and other parts of the world. Despite several steps taken by these countries to bolster the availability of credit, there is a strong feeling in all parts of the world that the recession is in the offing which will cause great hardships. Democracy is not only at the political level. But it should also encompass the economic activity in the State. To ward off recession, it is necessary to ensure guarantee of minimum requirements of life to everybody and prevent accumulation of wealth beyond a certain level by individuals. These concepts of economic democracy deserve to be implemented in letter and spirit in order to wipe out poverty and ensure prosperity to everybody. Likewise moralist leadership in the politics is essential to root out corruption and optimum use of various resources for public good. |
