The article 'Irresponsible Journalism' by Brijendra Singh Panwar in the January 2009 issue of Prout, rightly pointed out that the Indian media went overboard in its coverage of the Taj attacks. The way the electronic channels beamed each and every movement of the security forces, it seemed as if the mediamen, instead of the securitymen, were on a heroic mission.
Media's argument that they wanted to capture the seriousness of the situation cannot rid them of the repercussions of the live telecast. It seemed as if they went TRP hungry to the extent of undermining nation's interests. Ideally, the media should have utilised the opportunity to investigate deeply into the lapses, which led to the situation. Though, they later tried to delve further into the matter, general public was already overwhelmed with the intensity of the media coverage and did not want more of it.
It is high time, the media realised that they even their activities can come under the public scanner. If they can question everything, even they are answerable for their actions. Though media has been greatly responsible for creating awareness regarding several burning issues concerning our country, this same awareness can turn the heat on it. |
