SEVEN POSITIVE TRENDS AMIDST THE DOOM AND GLOOM

Despite several disappointing incidents taking place across the world, there are some elements which offer hope for the future. Let’s look into some of them.

While there is a great deal of bad, indeed, horrendous,  news in the world - global warming, terrorism, the global financial crisis, water shortages, worsening inequity - there are also signs of positive change.

New Horizons (Feature heading)

The recent economic downfall has made us sit down and reflect over the various types of economic systems. This analytical study can help us find out a way to a people-oriented economic system guided by general welfare.

Till now, humanity has conceived two economic systems for its well being. The first one is analytical economics and the second one is symbiotic economics.
What is analytical economics? In analytical economics, the concept starts from the state and ends with the individual. If the state is prosperous and if the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) or the foreign exchange reserves are increasing, this will be treated as a measure of the welfare of the citizens. Analytical economics is always calculated in terms of the increase of GDP or the foreign exchanges reserves and the lowering of inflation is also regarded as the indicator of the health of the nation and consequently that of the people of the country.

In ancient India, women enjoyed a very high position but gradually their position degenerated into merely objects of pleasure meant to serve certain purpose. They lost their individual identity and even their basic human rights. It is high time we looked into the factors responsible for this degeneration and mended our ways so that a very vital section of the society does not stay ignored because then such a society would gradually decay.

Mission Poverty Alleviation

It has been more than half a century but India is yet to wipe out poverty. The factors responsible for the same are faulty policies of the successive governments, corrupt administration and slow implementation. The need of the hour, however, is to learn from our past mistakes, make necessary changes and sincerely embark on a mission to alleviate poverty from India.

FEATURES

The recent utterances of Varun Gandhi during the election campaign in India drew a lot of attention in media and political circles because of the religious and caste overtones in his speeches.

Beyond Sustainability

It is not just the environment that is on decline but the human culture in general is facing economic downfall, social unrest and political corruption. The need of the hour is to restore the weakening relationship between the human civilisation and the living world. Besides, the effort should also be to utilise the resources of our planet in a way so that it sustains the present generation and also supports the coming generations.

SOCIETY

The first part of this article was published in the April issue. This article is the second part of the two-part series.

The cycle of social evolution is such that it keeps on going up and down like a moving wheel. There is hope that the present downturn in the global social and economic sphere will ultimately lead to an upturn. What, however, is required that masses make an effort to bring about a change rather than try to escape the situation by finding a way out for themselves. This because, the adversity which affects one today will affect others tomorrow.
