COVER STORY

Mindless profit-making and concentration of wealth in the hands of a few has hurt the financial world across the globe. Even the remedies have not brought any relief. It is the tax payers who bear the brunt to bail out the economy while those responsible spend their stacked up millions to avert the authorities’ eyes from them.

FOCUS ON...

The economic downturn has made everybody sit up and contemplate on the alternatives to Capitalism or make it more people-oriented and not just individual and profit-centric. The need of the hour is economic democracy which promotes human welfare and development of the planet as a whole.

Carbon credit dollars to flow through China dams, but may do little for climate.

The hydroelectric dam, a low wall of concrete slicing across an old farming valley, is supposed to help a power company in distant Germany contribute to saving the climate — while putting lucrative “carbon credits” into the pockets of Chinese developers.
But, in the end the new Xiaoxi dam may do nothing to lower global-warming emissions as advertised. And, many of the 7,500 people displaced by the project still seethe over losing their homes and farmland.

Research shows that when people perform a particular act in a group, they develop group attachment. And, most of the people prefer their ideas or thoughts to be in consonance with their group. So, if you want people to act in a particular way, make them act in a group. Someone rightly said, man is a social animal.

INSPIRATIONAL

Once there were three trees on a hill in the woods. They were discussing their hopes and dreams when the first tree said, “Someday I hope to be a treasure chest. I could be filled with gold, silver and precious gems. I could be decorated with intricate carving and everyone would see the beauty.”

There are pearls in the deep sea, but one must hazard all to find them. If diving once does not bring you pearls, you need not therefore conclude that the sea is without them. Dive again and again. You are sure to be rewarded in the end. So is it with the finding of the Lord in this world. If your first attempt proves fruitless, do not lose heart. Persevere in your efforts. You are sure to realize Him at last.

HUMOUR & WIT

Guru Gampar had told his four disciples that they were never to do anything without his permission. One day while they were on their way to a distant town, Guru Gampar fell asleep in the bullock cart they were travelling in.

EDUCATION

It was a saying in the olden days that India lives in its villages. But, if we look at the initiatives taken by the Government for the rural people, this popular saying would appear a myth. Even in a state like Punjab, which has a strong rural economy, its rural population is yet to receive quality education. It is in this regard, that some experts have tried to look into the causes of the lack of participation of rural youngsters in professional education.

ECOLOGY

It is high time, we got into action not just to curb the practises, which have harmed our environment to such a great extent but to actually reverse the process. From the damaging green-house effect, we have to go green.

The migration and mechanisation in Brazil’s biofuel cane is a growing socio-economic problem. It is also an indication that the farming communities world over are suffering because of increasing globalisation and mechanisation. The issue needs to be addressed immediately to avoid any long term damage. Besides, it can also set an example for several other regions of the world.

HEALTH&FOOD

Take a pause right at this moment and observe your breathing. There are very strong chances that you are breathing through just one nostril. That is how, in fact, breathing “happens” throughout the day. You seldom use both the nostrils simultaneously.
